Black History: the foundation for progress in our communities
Black history is American history. The legacy of African Americans in the United States is one of remarkable resilience, innovation, and achievement. It is this legacy that has paved the way for organizations like Soteria Community Development Corporation to not only exist but to thrive in their missions.
Throughout American history, countless African American leaders and pioneers have fought for justice, equity, and opportunity. Their courageous efforts in advocating for civil rights, expanding access to education, and improving housing and employment conditions have laid the groundwork for future generations. These trailblazers faced incredible obstacles, yet their determination and vision opened doors that had long been closed to so many.
Today, Soteria Community Development Corporation stands on the shoulders of these giants. The organization’s success in providing housing, employment, education, and advocacy services is a direct result of the groundwork laid by those who came before. Without the sacrifices and contributions of Black leaders and communities, the vital work of fostering empowerment and self-sufficiency within underserved populations would not be possible.
Honoring and understanding Black history is essential—not just in February, but every day. By recognizing the profound impact of African American accomplishments, we affirm that the progress we see today is rooted in the courage, creativity, and leadership of those who cleared the way. This understanding inspires continued commitment to building stronger, more equitable communities for all.
As we reflect on these achievements, we extend our deepest gratitude to the Greenville community and our supporters across South Carolina. Their unwavering support, partnership, and belief in Soteria Community Development Corporation’s mission have been instrumental in making our reentry initiatives successful. Together, we continue to build pathways for hope, opportunity, and transformation for those we serve.
In Solidarity,
Jerry Blassingame
